Since 2007 stands at the gates of the historic city of Aix-en-Provence a new building dedicated to music: the Grand Theatre de Provence.
20 000 m2 including terraces, 1382 places, 10 rehearsal rooms 6000 which one of 440 m2, a modular pit seating up to 105 musicians: this exceptional building, designed by the Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti, fits into the large project urban development of the city of Aix-en-Provence: Sextius-Mirabeau. A new cultural forum sees the day, including the Pavilion black of Ballet Preljocaj, the city of the book, the Grand Theatre of Provence, and from 2013, the new Conservatory of music and dance.
The Grand Theatre offers more than 100 performances a year on average, welcomes artists in residence throughout the year (Orchestra French youth, the centuries, Café Zimmermann,...), also opens its studios and its room at the Festival of lyric Art Aix-en-Provence during the months of may, June and July.
Its raison d'etre is to suggest a place unifying around the music (symphonic concerts, music room, jazz, opera, recitals, world music) and dance, open to the largest number, music lovers and novices, and resolutely turned towards the pedagogy.
The biggest international artists are regularly invited: as a result of Jessye Norman who opened it, Anne - Sophie Mutter, Hélène Grimaud, Vadim Repin and many others have been warmly applauded in this room.
Orchestras such as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the national Orchestra of France, the national Orchestra of Lyon, the Paris Orchestra, Freiburger Barockorchester or Concerto Köln are regularly scheduled.
Some great dance performances are also welcomed at the Grand Theatre, which the huge tray lends itself perfectly to the ballet: Ballet Preljocaj, the Ballet of the Paris Opera, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, etc., have stayed within its walls.
Around the concerts season, many workshops and meetings are open to all, in order to facilitate access to the music. The Grand Theatre, with the support of the sad association, undertakes throughout the year of operations of the music of prevented public awareness (house arrest, hospitals, etc.). Its know-how and its success helped to establish fruitful and lasting ties with several major artistic institutions French: the city of music in Paris or Radio France with which it is in partnership.
Finally, the Grand Theatre de Provence, widely participating in the cultural dynamism of the region, is also a true economic player: with, own, 110 000 spectators annually it contributes to the attractiveness of a city and territory of 300,000 people who annually, through its cultural and tourist initiatives five to six times its population. The presence of more than 2500 artists for the year 2013 as part of the programming and the Easter Festival, in addition to the 130 000 spectators expected, is also a factor of significant local economic development (restaurants, nights...).
The Grand Theatre of Provence - Eurl Mirabeau was awarded as the main creator of jobs in the country of Aix in 2008.
